Wildcats Fulfer, Smith lead respective groups in day one of Chico Multi

CHICO – With five events down and five to go in the Decathlon, Chico State’s Talor Fulfer collected 3,397 points to lead the 11-man Group A, while Wildcat teammate J. Patrick Smith posted 3,379 in pacing the 10-man Group B field in Thursday’s first day of the Chico Multi at University Stadium.

Fulfer, a junior transfer from American River College, heads into Friday’s second and final day of competition with a slim 8-point lead over Kevin Godfrey of Lane Community College and 16 points ahead of another Chico State Decathlete, senior Brian Beeman. Fulfer tied for sixth in Group A in the 100-meter dash, but came back to finish second in the long jump, won the shot put with a throw of 12.03 meters, was second in the high jump and eighth in the 400-meter dash. Beeman’s top event was the high jump, winning the Group A competition with a leap of 1.94 meters. Wildcat sophomore Jon-Michael Delima, also participating in Group A, finished day one of Chico Multi in eighth place with 2,875 points. Chico State’s Michael Beeman, competing unattached, was seventh after the first five events with 3,128 points.

CHICO MULTI DAY ONE RESULTS - Decathlon Group A

In Group B, Smith holds a 147-point lead over Wildcat teammate John Brunk, who piled up 3,232 points in the day one competition. Smith, a freshman from Santa Barbara, was very consistent Thursday, winning the long jump with a leap of 6.51 meters, finished second in the shot put (10.83 meters), the 100-meter (11.44 seconds) and 400-meter dash (51.23 seconds), and had top five showings in the other two events. Brunk, a freshman from Oakdale, won the high jump with a leap of 1.88 meters, and finished no lower than third in three other events. Chico State sophomore Michael Storer finished day one with 2,796 points, good for sixth place in the Group B lineup, but won the shot put with a throw of 11.21 meters. Wildcat freshman Taylor Toretto, competing unattached, was eighth in Group B with 2,526 points.

CHICO MULTI DAY ONE RESULTS - Decathlon Group B

Friday’s second day of the Chico Multi Decathlon competition will include the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meter run. The first race is slated for 10:00 a.m.
