TURLOCK – For the second straight day, rain has forced the cancellation of scheduled games in the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational. As teams arrived Sunday morning at Turlock’s Pedretti Park, a downpour dumped more rain on the already saturated fields, prompting Cal State Stanislaus officials, which was hosting the 12-team tournament, to call off the remaining games. As a result, Chico State was one of only three teams to go undefeated in the rain-shortened tourney.
The Best of the West Invitational was scheduled to resume Sunday at 9:30 a.m. following the cancellation of 11 games on Saturday. Pedretti Park crews worked on the fields all day Saturday and had them ready for play early Sunday, only to be greeted by a heavy downpour. After a one hour delay, many teams opted to leave, while the remaining teams, tournament officials, umpires, ground crews and coaches deemed that the field would be unsafe to play on.
Eleven of the 35 tournament games were completed on Friday with Chico State, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Grand Canyon University all going 2-0. Because two days of the Best of the West Invitational were cancelled, no tournament winner was declared.
Chico State begins California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play next Friday and Saturday, traveling to southern California for a pair of doubleheaders against UC San Diego. Game one of Friday’s twinbill versus the Tritons is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m., with Saturday’s double dip will begin at 11:00 a.m.
