SAN JOSE – Chico State product Chris Wondolowski is heading back to his Bay Area roots. Wondolowski, a graduate of De La Salle High School (Concord) and Chico State University, was traded from the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer to the San Jose Earthquakes Tuesday.
The former Division II All-American who led the Wildcats to the 2004 NCAA Championship match, was drafted by San Jose in 2005. He and a conditional pick in the 2010 SuperDraft were dealt for forward Cam Weaver.
“We are happy to bring Chris back home to the Bay Area,” San Jose General Manager of Operations John Doyle is quoted as saying on the Earthquakes’ Web site. “He is a hard worker who we think can make a positive impact for us. He understands the game well and should fit in nicely with our team.”
Wondolowski has two goals (including one against the Earthquakes on March 28) and an assist this season for the second-place Dynamo. He has career totals of four goals and two assists.
Houston Coach Dominic Kinnear told the Contra Costa Times that Wondolowski was overshadowed by Houston's other forwards.
"But I'm going to miss him," Kinnear added. "He's one of the best teammates I've seen in my whole life."
Wondolowski will presumably kick off his second stint with the Earthquakes this Saturday night at Seattle. His first game back home in San Jose is scheduled to take place Saturday, June 20, against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
