EUGENE, Ore. – Past, present and future members of the Chico State men’s track & field team have been competing this week at the USA Track & Field Outdoor National Championships, with young Wildcat Anthony Solis delivering an electrifying second place finish Saturday in the junior men’s 10,000-meter run during the four-day event at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.
Solis, who redshirted for Chico State in both cross country and track as a freshman, ran the 10k in 31:33.06, finishing behind winner Patrick Stinson (31:18.13). The impressive second place finish qualifies the Barstow, Calif. native to compete in the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, held at Hasley Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad July 31-August 2.
Former Wildcat All-American and 5k National Champion Charlie Serrano, who qualified for the USA Track & Field Championship earlier this month, capped off the best season of his short professional career with a 15th place finish Thursday in the men’s 10,000-meter run, posting a time of 29:04.63. Scott Bauhs met with disappointment, however: the three-time National Champion also ran the 10k Thursday but did not finish. The ex-Wildcat, now running professionally for Adidas, came back to post a 10th place finish in Friday’s 5,000-meter run, with a time of 13:39.06.
Chico State All-American Michael Wickman was also part of the USATF National Championships, coming in 37th in a talent-laden field during Thursday’s first round of the 1,500-meter run. Wickman’s time of 3:49.62 left him short of qualifying for Sunday’s 1,500-meter finals.
The Wildcats’ top incoming freshman, Isaac Chavez, finished 14th in the junior 5,000-meter run Sunday afternoon during the final event of the four-day USATF meet. The former Barstow High School star posted a time of 15:19.34.
